Synopsis: Fire, Graceling's prequel-ish companion book, takes place across the mountains to the east of the seven kingdoms, in a rocky, war-torn land called the Dells.
Beautiful creatures called monsters live in the Dells. Monsters have the shape of normal animals: mountain lions, dragonflies, horses, fish. But the hair or scales or feathers of monsters are gorgeously colored-- fuchsia, turquoise, sparkly bronze, iridescent green-- and their minds have the power to control the minds of humans.
Seventeen-year-old Fire is the last remaining human-shaped monster in the Dells. Gorgeously monstrous in body and mind but with a human appreciation of right and wrong, she is hated and mistrusted by just about everyone, and this book is her story.
Ok, I didn't want to be spoiled so I did not read any of the arc reviews, or blog tour stuff. At first I was a little confused, I didn't realize it was a prequel. The book starts out slow, but picks up about half way. Great book, I LOVE that Kristin writes strong female roles.
Fire's story, takes place beyond the 7 kingdoms, in a place called Dells. Beautiful animal shaped monsters walk the earth; they are identified by their coloring. Fire is a human shaped monster, the last of her kind. Her beauty, mind control and monster status make her an outcast, and puts her in danger. Fire is scared she will turn out like her horrible father Cansrel. She tries to isolate herself from humans as much as possible, although it’s not enough for her friend and lover Archer.
When Prince Brigan requests her aid in his capitol she agrees to join him. Brigan wants to use her to interrogate spies. He knew Fires father, and is extremely suspicious of her; she is kept under guard at all times. He would rather have her killed.
Fire has to make a choice, give up what makes her "human" an aid Prince Brigan and his brother King Nash, or let the war continue.
There is a little bit of a cross over, King Leck makes a brief appearance in the story, as a child. It leaves you wanting to know more about his history. Is he a monster or just a Graceling?
